2 dead, 4 injured in Harare-Bulawayo highway accident

road accident

A head-on collision along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway on Tuesday afternoon resulted in the tragic deaths of two people, with four others injured. The accident occurred at the 245 km peg near Gweru. According to Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Cloud Mararike, a 46-year-old man from Shurugwi, was driving a Mercedes-Benz towards Bulawayo when his vehicle reportedly experienced a malfunction, causing it to lock its steering and brakes. This mechanical failure led him to veer into the opposite lane, colliding with a Honda Fit driven by an unidentified woman.

The crash claimed the lives of two female passengers in the Honda Fit, while four others sustained varying injuries. Emergency services transported the injured to Gweru Provincial Hospital for treatment. Remarkably, witnesses reported that a six-month-old baby in the Honda Fit was thrown clear of the vehicle during the impact and was found unharmed a few meters away from the accident scene.

Inspector Mahoko urged motorists to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out on journeys, emphasizing the importance of safety on the roads. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of mechanical failures while driving.
