Horror on Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road: 12 Die in Fiery Toyota Quantum Explosion Near Esigodini

A tragic incident has left Zimbabwe in mourning after a deadly road explosion claimed the lives of 12 people along the busy Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road.

The fatal accident occurred on 17 April 2026 at approximately 12:45 PM at the 27-kilometre peg near Esigodini. According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, a Toyota Quantum carrying 11 passengers suddenly exploded, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life.

Authorities confirmed that all 12 occupants in the vehicle perished in the blast. The force of the explosion completely destroyed the minibus, leaving behind charred wreckage scattered across the roadside. Witnesses described the scene as devastating, with emergency responders arriving to find the vehicle reduced to debris.

Police have since begun a full investigation into the cause of the explosion, which remains unknown at this stage. While speculation has circulated about the possibility of hazardous materials being transported in the vehicle, officials have not confirmed any such findings. Investigators are continuing to examine the wreckage and gather evidence to determine what may have triggered the deadly blast.
