State to assist with Rufaro Machingura’s funeral

Rufaro Machingura

THE late Mighty Warriors and Black Rhinos Striker Rufaro Machingura has been granted a state-assisted funeral. Machingura died on Thursday morning in Harare after a long illness.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Mr George Charamba confirmed the decision by the government to bestow a State-assisted funeral on the late Mighty Warriors star.

“After consultations with the President, the Acting President General (Rtd) Dr C.G.D.N Chiwenga has announced that the government has granted a State-assisted funeral for Rufaro Machingura,” he said.

“This means the government will bear all the costs associated with the late footballer’s funeral.”

Affectionately known as Mafidi by her legions of fans, Rufaro Machingura famously scored the goal that sank Banyana Banyana in the COSAFA Women’s Final at the ceremonial home of football, Rufaro Stadium in 2011, leading the Mighty Warriors to lift the regional trophy.

This led to the coining of the phrase ‘Rufaro akagohwesa muRufaro nyika ikava ne Rufaro” (Rufaro scored at Rufaro Stadium giving joy to the nation)

Mourners are gathered at House Number 4617 Retreat Park, Waterfalls, in Harare.
