Sierra Leone vs Zimbabwe Produces Five-Goal Thriller
Zimbabwe produced a sensational second-half comeback to beat Sierra Leone 3-2 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday night.
The Warriors looked down and almost out after going into halftime trailing 2-0 in Morocco. However, Marshall Munetsi inspired an incredible turnaround with two goals, while Tawanda Chirewa also found the net as Zimbabwe scored three times in the closing stages.
For new Warriors coach Ramon Catala, it could hardly have been a more dramatic competitive start.
Zimbabwe had struggled badly during the opening 45 minutes, but whatever was said during the break transformed the team. The Warriors returned with greater urgency, took control and eventually completed one of their most memorable recent comebacks.
Sierra Leone Punish Zimbabwe Early
The Sierra Leone vs Zimbabwe clash started badly for the Warriors.
Sierra Leone needed only seven minutes to take the lead through Alie Conteh, who connected with a delivery from the left and beat goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.
Zimbabwe struggled to settle after conceding.
The Warriors had possession but looked vulnerable whenever Sierra Leone attacked. Their problems became even bigger in the 27th minute when Sallieu Tarawallie struck to make it 2-0.
Suddenly, Zimbabwe were staring at defeat in their first match of the qualifying campaign.
Sierra Leone looked comfortable and carried their two-goal advantage into the halftime break.
Ramon Catala Changes the Game
Zimbabwe emerged from halftime looking like a completely different team.
The introduction of Bill Antonio helped inject more urgency into the Warriors’ performance, while Catala’s side began pushing higher and putting Sierra Leone under sustained pressure.
Zimbabwe moved the ball faster and started creating opportunities.
Still, Sierra Leone held onto their lead deep into the second half, and time appeared to be running out for the Warriors.
Then everything changed.
Marshall Munetsi Starts Incredible Comeback
In the 72nd minute, Marshall Munetsi finally gave Zimbabwe hope.
The experienced midfielder pulled one back to make it 2-1 and suddenly Sierra Leone’s comfortable advantage disappeared.
Zimbabwe sensed an opportunity.
Just four minutes later, Tawanda Chirewa produced the equaliser.
His 76th-minute strike made it 2-2 and completely changed the atmosphere of the contest. A match Sierra Leone appeared to have under control was suddenly there for either side to win.
The Warriors were not satisfied with a point.
They continued pushing forward.
Munetsi Scores Dramatic Late Winner
With only two minutes of normal time remaining, Munetsi struck again.
The midfielder connected with a delivery from the left in the 88th minute to complete an astonishing turnaround and put Zimbabwe 3-2 ahead.
From being two goals down at halftime, the Warriors had scored three unanswered goals in just 16 minutes.
Sierra Leone had little time to respond.
Zimbabwe held on through the closing stages to secure all three points and start their AFCON qualification campaign with a victory that few would have expected after watching the first half.
Munetsi finished the night as Zimbabwe’s hero with two goals.
Warriors Show Character After Poor First Half
The victory will give Catala plenty to celebrate, although the first-half performance also provides several areas to address.
Zimbabwe cannot afford to give stronger teams two-goal advantages regularly.
However, the response after halftime demonstrated character, belief and attacking quality.
Instead of accepting defeat, the Warriors kept pushing until they found a way back into the contest.
Statistics from the match also reflected Zimbabwe’s improved performance, with the Warriors finishing with more possession and significantly more attempts at goal than Sierra Leone.
The difference was eventually their ability to convert pressure into goals when it mattered most.
Perfect Start to AFCON Qualifying Campaign
The win gives Zimbabwe three important points in Group E.
Elsewhere in the group, the Democratic Republic of Congo also started with a victory after beating Equatorial Guinea 2-0.
That leaves Zimbabwe and DR Congo with three points each after the opening round of matches.
The Warriors now have little time to celebrate.
Their next challenge comes against DR Congo on Monday, 28 September, in what could already become an important early battle in the race for qualification.
Zimbabwe will know that DR Congo present a major step up in quality, but Thursday night’s comeback should give Catala’s players plenty of confidence.
Munetsi and Chirewa Give Zimbabwe Something to Believe In
For Warriors supporters, the result was about much more than three points.
Zimbabwe have endured difficult periods in international football, making performances filled with determination and fighting spirit particularly important.
Munetsi once again showed his value to the national team. Chirewa also delivered when Zimbabwe desperately needed inspiration.
More importantly, the Warriors showed they can recover even when a match appears to be slipping away.
At halftime, Sierra Leone looked firmly in control.
By full-time, Zimbabwe were celebrating a remarkable 3-2 victory.
If this is a sign of the mentality Catala wants to build within the Warriors, Zimbabwe’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign could have plenty more drama ahead.
