President Mnangagwa honors heroic truck driver with the Gold cross of Zimbabwe for saving lives in bus fire rescue

In a moving ceremony at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, President Emmerson Mnangagwa awarded Sirizani Butau the prestigious Gold Cross of Zimbabwe, recognizing his extraordinary bravery and selflessness. The award was presented during the Heroes Day commemorations, celebrating the acts of heroism and sacrifice that define Zimbabwean resilience and courage.

The recognition stems from Butau’s heroic actions following a tragic accident on the Mutare-Harare highway in December 2021. A Beta bus collided with a fuel tanker haulage truck, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that engulfed the bus in flames. The accident, which occurred approximately 20 km outside Mutare, left passengers in desperate need of rescue as the inferno rapidly spread.

Despite not being involved in the collision, Butau, who was passing by the scene, did not hesitate to act. Demonstrating remarkable courage, he rushed into the burning wreckage to rescue the trapped passengers. His swift and fearless intervention led to the successful rescue of eight people from the inferno. Unfortunately, Butau’s heroic efforts came at a significant personal cost; he sustained severe burns to his hands and legs and spent his Christmas in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

President Mnangagwa, in bestowing the Gold Cross of Zimbabwe upon Butau, highlighted the profound impact of his actions. “Sirizani Butau’s bravery in the face of such extreme danger exemplifies the spirit of heroism that our nation honors today. His selflessness in risking his own life to save others is a testament to the values of courage and sacrifice that define our national character,” the President remarked during the award presentation.

The Gold Cross of Zimbabwe is one of the highest national honors, reserved for individuals who display extraordinary acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. Butau’s recognition stands as a symbol of the heroism that continues to inspire and uplift the nation, reinforcing the importance of such selfless deeds in the collective memory and pride of Zimbabwe.

As Butau recuperates from his injuries, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the impact one individual can have in the face of adversity. The award not only celebrates his remarkable bravery but also pays tribute to the spirit of humanity and compassion that can arise even in the direst of circumstances.
