President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warmly welcomed a group of former opposition members back into the fold of the ruling ZANU PF party. The returnees, led by Dzikamai Mavhaire, a former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) National Executive Committee member, met with the President at State House in Harare on Wednesday.
Mavhaire, who was expelled from ZANU PF in 2013 before joining the CCC, was accompanied by his son, Lawrence Mavhaire, and former CCC legislator Oliver Chirume. During the meeting, Chirume expressed his reasons for returning, stating, “I have come to join the party owing to its positive development trajectory that is inclusive of everyone.”
The leadership of ZANU PF’s Masvingo province expressed their support for the returnees. Politburo member Cde Lovemore Matuke emphasized, “ZANU PF is for everyone, and we welcome seasoned politicians like Dzikamai Mavhaire and those accompanying him.” Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa, the Masvingo provincial chairperson, also acknowledged the significance of the party’s development trajectory in attracting former opposition members back to ZANU PF.
This trend of former opposition figures joining the ruling party has been noted in recent years, with many citing confusion within opposition politics and the appeal of ZANU PF’s developmental agenda as key reasons for their return.
