The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) has announced the results for the June 2024 Advanced and Ordinary Level examinations, revealing a mixed bag of outcomes. The overall pass rates for the two levels were reported as 25% for Advanced Level and 73.23% for Ordinary Level.
Candidate Statistics A total of 30,088 candidates sat for the June 2024 examinations, representing an increase of 38.76% compared to the 21,683 candidates who sat in June 2023. This marks a significant rise in candidate participation.

– **Registration and Participation**: Out of the 32,026 candidates who registered for the Ordinary Level exams, 30,088 appeared for the tests. This includes 825 school candidates and 29,263 private candidates.
– **Performance**: Of the candidates who sat for five or more subjects, 383 (1.27% of the total candidature) managed to achieve a Grade C or better, resulting in a pass rate of 4.44%. In comparison, last year 365 candidates (1.68% of the total candidature) achieved a pass rate of 0.46% in similar conditions.

– **Registration and Participation**: For Advanced Level, 144 candidates were registered, comprising 19 school candidates and 125 private candidates. Only 120 candidates sat for the exams, a notable decrease of 53% compared to the 256 candidates in June 2023.
– **Performance**: Out of the 120 candidates, 38 achieved Grade E or better in two or more subjects, giving an overall pass rate of 31.67%. This represents a sharp decline from last year’s 75.89% pass rate, with 85 out of 112 candidates meeting the criteria.
– **Special Needs Candidates**: The number of candidates with special needs increased from 14 to 38, reflecting a 157% rise.
– **Absenteeism**: A total of 1,938 candidates registered for the exams but did not sit for them.
– **Calas Submission**: The ministry emphasized the importance of Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (Calas), noting that candidates who did not submit their Calas would be considered incomplete in their assessment and thus would not receive results.
Zimsec board chairperson Paul Mapfumo provided these insights during a press briefing in Harare, highlighting both the progress in candidate participation and the challenges faced in overall pass rates. School heads are advised to collect the results from regional offices starting today, while learners can access their results via the Zimsec portal.
