Police crackdown on illegal miners in Mazowe

Zim police

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a strong warning to illegal miners operating in Mazowe Mine Lease 35, directing them to vacate the premises by July 13. This directive follows an official eviction notice issued by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.

ZRP Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated, “The Government, through the Ministry Of Mines And Mining Development, has recently issued an eviction notice and order for all illegal occupants engaged in mining activities, land destruction, and criminal acts to leave Mazowe Mine Lease 35.”

He cautioned that the police will take action against mining syndicates in defiance of government orders. The eviction notice spans from July 6 to July 13, 2024, encompassing areas extending from ZRP Mazowe to Concession.

There are reports indicating challenges faced by Metallon Corporation, the parent company of Mazowe Mine, in resuming regular mining operations at the site, due to illegal gold miners refusing to vacate.

The mine had previously halted operations twice: first in September 2018 due to financial constraints and other challenges, and again in 2019 when informal miners encroached on the property, rendering operations unsafe. Earlier this year, however, the mine announced plans to resume underground mining operations, which had been on hold since 2019.
