Michigan inmate awarded $100 million judgment against Sean Diddy Combs

In a surprising legal development, a Michigan inmate, Derrick Lee Smith, has been awarded a $100 million judgment against Sean “Diddy” Combs. The judgment was granted by default in Lenawee County Circuit Court after Combs, the renowned rapper and record producer, failed to appear for a scheduled virtual hearing.

Derrick Lee Smith, 51, who is currently serving a 75-year prison sentence for multiple counts of sexual misconduct and kidnapping, alleged that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted him at a party nearly 30 years ago. The court’s decision to award the multimillion-dollar judgment came after Smith’s complaints and a temporary restraining order were filed in June and August of this year.

Smith’s legal action against Combs has drawn significant attention, particularly given the high-profile nature of the accused. Combs, 54, is widely recognized as a major figure in the music industry, known for founding Bad Boy Records, his contributions as a producer, performer, and the founder of the Sean John clothing line.

In response to the judgment, Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, strongly denounced the claims and stated that the rapper had never been served with the lawsuit. “This man (Smith) is a convicted felon and sexual predator, who has been sentenced on 14 counts of sexual assault and kidnapping over the last 26 years,” Agnifilo said in a statement. “His resume now includes committing a fraud on the court from prison, as Mr. Combs has never heard of him let alone been served with any lawsuit. Mr. Combs looks forward to having this judgment swiftly dismissed.”

The statement from Combs’ legal team indicates a plan to challenge and overturn the judgment. Agnifilo’s remarks emphasize the contention that Smith’s legal claims are baseless and part of an alleged attempt to defraud the court.

The judgment is notable not only because of the substantial amount involved but also due to Combs’ prominent status in the entertainment industry. As Combs faces this legal challenge, the situation remains fluid, with potential legal maneuvers expected to follow as both parties navigate the complexities of the case. This development adds another layer to the ongoing legal battles faced by Combs, who has several other sexual assault cases pending. The outcome of Smith’s case could have broader implications depending on how it unfolds in the courts.
