Man claims his parents practiced witchcraft, destroys home and car in arson attack

house-fire

The quiet town of Chinhoyi was left in disbelief following a tumultuous family dispute that escalated into an alarming act of arson. The incident, involving a young man named Knowledge Jani, has dominated local discussions as the community processed the shocking events that unfolded during a lengthy trial at the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court.

On April 22, 2024, a family argument turned violent when the 21-year-old resident of Shackleton Mine confronted his father and stepmother. Fueled by anger, Jani accused them of practicing witchcraft, which he claimed was the root cause of his ongoing health issues. This confrontation quickly spiraled out of control.

In a fit of rage, Jani vandalized his father’s vehicle, a Nissan Sunny, shattering its windows and causing extensive damage to its bodywork using stones. The situation escalated further when he siphoned fuel from the car’s tank, pouring it onto the family home before igniting the flames. The house was engulfed in fire, leading to severe damage to both the property and the vehicle. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the destruction was extensive by the time they arrived.

In the aftermath, Jani’s father, in shock, contacted the police, who promptly arrested him at the scene. An official assessment later estimated the total damages from the arson incident to be around USD 14,000. Following months of legal proceedings, the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court found Knowledge Jani guilty of malicious property damage. The court delivered a verdict that included a prison sentence of four years, with one year suspended on the condition that Jani refrains from committing similar offenses during that time. Consequently, he will serve an effective sentence of three years.

This case has sparked considerable discussion within the Chinhoyi community, highlighting the severe consequences of unchecked anger and family disputes. Many residents expressed shock at the severity of the incident, emphasizing the need for open communication and conflict resolution in familial relationships. The incident serves as a grim reminder of how quickly a disagreement can escalate into irreversible actions, leaving lasting repercussions for all involved.
