Kwaito legend General GTZ passes away

Siphiwe General GTZ Sibisi

The South African music scene is mourning the loss of Siphiwe General GTZ Sibisi, the last existing member of the iconic Kwaito group Chiskop. Several sources have confirmed his passing, with reports indicating he had been battling serious health complications following a botched operation in 2022.

General GTZ’s health struggles intensified after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer, a condition that arose from complications during surgery. In a previous interview, he shared the distressing news that doctors had mistakenly cut the wrong tubes in his gut, leading to a decline in his health. Sadly, he succumbed to his illness earlier today, despite showing signs of recovery just days ago.

In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed their sorrow: “The family of Siphiwe ‘General GTZ’ Sibisi announces with deep sadness our great loss suffered through the passing of our dear one, after hospitalization where he underwent major surgery.” They also extended their gratitude to those who supported him throughout his life and career, stating, “May his beautiful, kind spirit live on through the legacy of his Kwaito.”

General GTZ was part of Chiskop, a pioneering Kwaito group formed in the late 1980s alongside notable artists like Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala, Sizwe “Lollipop” Motaung, and Sibusiso “SB-Bless” Thenjekwayo. The group played a crucial role in shaping the Kwaito genre, with hits like “Klaimer” and “Abantwana” leaving an indelible mark on South Africa’s cultural landscape.

His passing comes just weeks after the loss of fellow Kwaito legend Mapaputi, further highlighting the significant impact these artists have had on the music industry. General GTZ will be remembered not only for his contributions to Kwaito but also for his enduring spirit and influence on future generations of musicians.
