Job Sikhala returns to Zimbabwe despite threats to his safety

Outspoken opposition figure and Vice-Chairman of the Citizens Coalition for Change, Job Sikhala, is expected to arrive home today following a prolonged absence abroad. His imminent return has been confirmed by sources from his new political organization, the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), who acknowledged potential government interference but emphasized Sikhala’s determination.

“Our information indicates that Job Sikhala will land this morning at Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare,” the source revealed, noting his arrival via South African airline Safair around 9am. Upon touchdown, Sikhala will be accompanied by diplomats and officials from Amnesty International. His return follows a period of overseas medical treatment subsequent to enduring 595 days of pre-trial detention at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.

While abroad, Sikhala actively participated in international political engagements, including appearances on BBC Hardtalk and delivering a keynote address at the United Nations Summit on Human Rights and Democracy. His outspoken advocacy on global platforms drew considerable backlash and threats from Zimbabwean authorities, Zanu-PF leaders, and affiliated members.

In response to the threats, Sikhala, who has been arrested more than 60 times for his activism, maintained his resolute stance: “The prospect of arrest is nothing new. It has become a regime tactic to persecute me when they fail to address the country’s challenges. I do not believe my arrest will resolve our issues.”

Addressing his speech at the Geneva conference, Sikhala defended its contents as truthful and within the bounds of international law, validated by the UN Human Rights Council. Despite the risks involved, he expressed no apprehension about returning to Zimbabwe, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the country, his sole homeland.
