Actor Martin Mull dead at 80 after long-term illness

Martin Mull

Martin Mull passed away at the age of 80 after battling a long illness. His daughter, Maggie Mull, announced his death on Instagram on June 28th, sharing a heartfelt tribute along with a photo of the late actor petting his dog.

“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness,” Maggie captioned the photo. “He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously.”

Martin Mull was celebrated for his roles in popular television series such as “Roseanne,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Arrested Development,” and “Clue.” He also made notable guest appearances on “Community,” “The Afterparty,” and “Grace and Frankie.” In 2016, he received an Emmy nomination for his role as Bob Bradley in “Veep.”

Before his marriage to Wendy Haas, whom he wed in 1982 and was married to for 41 years, Martin was previously married to Sandra Baker and Kristin Johnson. His daughter Maggie followed in his footsteps in the entertainment industry, working as a producer on shows including “Family Guy,” “Maggie,” “Life in Pieces,” and “Not Dead Yet,” which featured her father.

Melissa Joan Hart, Martin’s co-star from “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” also paid tribute to him on Instagram, remembering him fondly. “Rest in Peace my friend. The incredible #MartinMull (Principal Kraft) has left us for his eternal rest,” she wrote alongside a photo of them together on set. “I have such fond memories of working with him and being in awe of his huge body of work.”

“He once told me that he takes every job he’s offered just in case the train comes to an end, which in this business tends to halt quickly,” she continued. “But he was an artist who liked to paint and build things with his hands, a musician and a wonderful man who I am better for knowing. He will be missed but this world has benefited from his being here. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. I will continue to cherish the Martin Mull artwork hanging in my home!”

Martin Mull’s legacy as a versatile and beloved actor, musician, and artist will be remembered by many across the entertainment industry and beyond.
