12-year prison term for 7 Harare thieves who robbed 89-year-old of US$60K

Seven Harare men have been sentenced to 12 years in prison each for their involvement in a violent robbery that targeted an elderly couple in November 2022. The convicts, Paul Makamelo, Kelvin Zimomo, Sign Makamelo, Partially Makamelo, Tonderai Norest Chibvongodze, Christopher Sithole, and Innocent Kasu, were found guilty by the Harare Magistrates’ Court of a robbery that shocked the community.

The crime occurred on November 29, 2022, around 7 PM, when the seven men forcibly entered the home of 89-year-old James Abrahams and his wife. At the time of the attack, the elderly couple was in their bedroom. Armed with knives and iron bars, the robbers violently demanded money and began ransacking the room.

According to reports, the robbers aggressively confronted Abrahams, who informed them he had no money. One of the men kicked Abraham and ordered him to sit down. Another robber produced a nylon cable, using it to bind Abraham and his wife before forcing them to sit on the floor. The robbers then seized a safe from the room, placing it on a chair while they continued to assault the couple.

In a desperate attempt to retrieve valuables, Abraham’s wife was untied and instructed to fetch the safe keys from a cupboard. Although they attempted to open the safe, the robbers failed and decided to take the entire safe, which contained US$55,000, gold, and other valuables. They locked the couple inside the bedroom before fleeing the scene.

The total value of the stolen items was estimated at US$62,415, with only US$6,000 recovered by the authorities. Following a police report and thorough investigations, the seven men were apprehended and subsequently convicted for their crimes.

This case underscores the severity of violent crime and the impact it has on victims, particularly vulnerable individuals like the elderly. The lengthy sentences handed down aim to reflect the seriousness of the offense and provide a measure of justice for the affected couple.
