Spanish tourist trampled to death by an elephant in SA

Management at Pilanesberg National Park has expressed its condolences to the family of a Spanish tourist who tragically lost his life over the weekend after being trampled by an elephant. The incident occurred as the 43-year-old man, accompanied by his fiancé and another individual, stopped their vehicle to photograph a group of elephants and their calves within the North West reserve.

According to reports, the elephants, led by their matriarch, unexpectedly attacked the man. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Pieter Nel, Chief Conservation Officer of the North West Parks and Tourism Board, emphasized the importance of visitors remaining inside their vehicles at all times while in the park.

He clarified that no punitive measures would be taken against the elephant involved, noting that the incident stemmed from the instincts of a breeding group, where the matriarch responded as she would in the wild. Nel underscored that Pilanesberg is a nature reserve, stressing the need for visitors to exercise caution and respect animals in their natural habitat.

Deborah Mooketsi, Chief Marketing Officer at North West Parks, highlighted that comprehensive information is provided to park visitors regarding proper behavior, procedures, and protocols. She reassured the public that such incidents are rare and isolated within the reserve.
