Police dismiss rumors of public gathering ban ahead of SADC summit

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has officially refuted social media claims suggesting that the Zimbabwean government has imposed a ban on public gatherings in light of the upcoming Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit. In a recent statement, the ZRP labeled these rumors as unfounded and urged the public to ignore the misinformation.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police dismisses social media postings alleging that the Government of Zimbabwe has banned or prohibited public gatherings due to the forthcoming Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit. This is false. The public should dismiss this false information with the contempt it deserves,” the ZRP stated.

The statement comes amidst a flurry of event cancellations and postponements. Organizers of notable events, such as BraaiOutZW and Fiesta Fiesta, have recently announced changes to their schedules, citing the SADC Summit as a contributing factor. BraaiOutZW, for instance, has postponed its planned event from August 9-10 to September 27-28. The organizers attributed the rescheduling to “unforeseen circumstances beyond their control,” including the SADC Summit, which they noted could potentially cause conflicts.

In their announcement, BraaiOutZW expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the change and assured attendees that their tickets would remain valid for the rescheduled dates. They also promised additional perks as an apology, including a free pass to Graceland Resort and a complimentary activity of choice for all ticket holders.

The ZRP’s clarification underscores the importance of discerning credible information from false reports. The police emphasized that while national laws should always be observed, there is no official restriction on public gatherings tied to the SADC Summit. They called on citizens to continue their activities responsibly while adhering to the law.

The Southern African Development Community Summit, scheduled to take place from August 10-17, is a significant event expected to attract high-level delegates from across the region. As such, organizers and participants alike are advised to stay informed through official channels and to make plans accordingly.
