Legendary TV host Phil Donahue has died

Phil Donahue, the legendary television host who revolutionized the talk show format with his eponymous program, passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was surrounded by his family, including his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, their children, and grandchildren, at his home. In a statement to ‘TODAY,’ the family announced Donahue’s passing and requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.

Phil Donahue’s career began in the 1950s, working for local radio and TV stations in Cleveland. His journey into the national spotlight began in the 1960s with his phone-in talk show in Dayton, Ohio. Donahue’s program quickly became a platform for high-profile interviews with influential figures, including former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, late-night host Johnny Carson, and civil rights activist Malcolm X.

In November 1967, Donahue launched ‘The Phil Donahue Show,’ which would go on to become a defining program in television history. Airing for nearly three decades, the show gained international acclaim, reaching audiences in the UK and Australia as well as the United States.

The show was known for tackling controversial issues and providing a forum for both liberal and conservative viewpoints, covering topics such as civil rights and abortion. Despite its decline in ratings in the mid-1990s, leading to its final episode on September 13, 1996, Donahue’s impact on the television industry remains profound.

As the media world and fans mourn Donahue’s passing, his contributions to television and his pioneering spirit continue to be celebrated. His family’s request for charitable donations in his memory reflects the values he championed throughout his life.
