Seven artisanal miners tragically lost their lives in Zimbabwe after a disused gold shaft collapsed over the weekend, underscoring the dangers of illegal mining activities in the country. The incident occurred on Saturday in Bindura, a town located about 85 kilometers (53 miles) north of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital. While the police have yet to provide full details on the circumstances surrounding the collapse, the tragedy has once again highlighted the risks miners face in unsafe, unregulated mining environments.
Zimbabwe is home to vast mineral reserves, including gold, platinum, diamonds, and copper, which have long been a source of economic activity. However, with the country’s economy facing significant challenges, illegal mining has flourished, often under perilous conditions. The incident in Bindura is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by such operations.
According to police reports, the collapse occurred at a disused gold mine shaft, a location that had become a hotspot for illegal mining activities. Despite warnings from authorities about the risks associated with mining in abandoned or illegal shafts, many miners continue to venture into these unstable sites. In response to the tragedy, police have issued a strong warning urging people to refrain from conducting mining activities in illegal shafts and disused mine sites, emphasizing that these areas are prone to collapse, especially after recent heavy rains.
“Recent heavy rains have saturated the ground, making mines prone to collapse,” the police stated in their warning on Monday. The rainy season has exacerbated the risk of accidents in areas where miners continue to work under dangerous conditions, often without the proper safety measures in place.
As of now, five of the seven victims have been identified. Their ages range from 20 to 34 years old. The police are still working to identify the remaining two victims, and efforts are underway to contact their next of kin. While the exact number of people in the mine at the time of the collapse has not been confirmed, reports from other miners at the site indicate that as many as 15 individuals may have been trapped.
The collapse in Bindura is just the latest in a series of deadly accidents at illegal mining sites in Zimbabwe. Such incidents have become all too common, with miners often working in hazardous conditions due to a lack of regulation, proper training, and safety equipment. In September 2023, at least nine people were killed in a similar mine collapse in Chegutu, which is about 120 kilometers west of Harare. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with the burgeoning illegal mining sector, which has led to an increase in fatalities.
The increase in illegal mining is a direct result of Zimbabwe’s struggling economy, where formal employment opportunities are limited, and many people turn to mining as a means of survival. Artisanal mining, often conducted in unsafe and unregulated conditions, has become a significant part of the informal economy. Miners, many of whom are desperate to provide for their families, often take perilous risks in search of valuable minerals.

The fatal collapse in Bindura also comes just days after a devastating mining accident in neighboring South Africa. In that incident, 87 bodies were recovered from an illegal mining operation, further emphasizing the dangers that miners face in the region. The tragic events in both Zimbabwe and South Africa serve as a powerful reminder of the human cost of illegal mining and the need for increased regulation and oversight to ensure the safety of workers in this high-risk industry.
Authorities in Zimbabwe are urging miners to cease operating in illegal shafts and to prioritize safety in their mining activities. As the country continues to face economic challenges, the hope is that stronger enforcement of mining regulations and better support for legal mining operations will help reduce the prevalence of illegal mining and, in turn, prevent further tragedies like the one in Bindura.
