The Zimbabwean government has ramped up its food distribution efforts in rural areas to address potential shortages exacerbated by the ongoing El Nino-induced drought. This assurance was given during a food deficit mitigation strategy meeting held in Masvingo on Thursday.
Honourable July Moyo, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, addressed concerns about food security, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring that all vulnerable communities receive adequate assistance. “We are working closely with traditional leaders and using community-based selection criteria to effectively reach those most in need,” Moyo stated. He also assured that the Grain Marketing Board has sufficient stocks to meet the country’s needs.
Communities in Masvingo province are benefiting from various government programs designed to mitigate the impact of the drought. Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, highlighted that the province is receiving consistent support through government intervention programs aimed at ensuring food security. “The food aid distribution is ongoing across all our districts,” Chadzamira said.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has pledged to collaborate with the government to maintain food security. From January to March this year, WFP’s food assistance program reached over 260,000 people across four districts: Mangwe, Chivi, Mwenezi, and Buhera. WFP’s head of program, Ms. Nina Beretta Piccoli, noted, “Our partnership with the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, along with the generous support from donors, has made it possible to provide critical food assistance.”
Despite the challenges posed by the drought, the government remains resolute in its promise that no one will suffer from hunger. Several strategies are being implemented to ensure that food security is maintained throughout the crisis.
