Gamuchirai Nemukuyu, the former wife of DJ Fantan, has accused the music producer of neglecting his parental responsibilities towards their children. She claims that Fantan only buys orange juice and sweets for the children while ignoring their more essential needs.
Nemukuyu brought her grievances to the Harare Civil Court, alleging that Fantan fabricated receipts claiming he spent $1500 on groceries. She demanded $300 for the children’s upkeep, disputing Fantan’s assertion that he already covers their grocery expenses.
“The grocery receipt he presented in court last time was fake. I discovered this when I got home; he had never spent $1500 on groceries,” she stated. “Since I moved in with my new husband, Fantan hasn’t contributed to rent or purchased groceries. I’m not asking him to pay my rent; I just want him to fulfill his responsibility as a father. All he brings are Mazoe, Cerevita, and sweets.”
In response, DJ Fantan argued that Nemukuyu’s maintenance claim stemmed from her reckless spending of the money he gave her. He asserted that he provides everything his children need and accused Nemukuyu of seeking maintenance to fund her lifestyle with friends. Magistrate Johanna Mukwesha subsequently ordered DJ Fantan to pay $100 monthly in maintenance for the children.
