The conferment was officially confirmed in a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, signed by ZANU PF Secretary General, Dr Obert Mpofu. The letter emphasised that the late Cde Chinyamutangira would be laid to rest at Mutare Provincial Heroes Acre, underscoring the nation’s gratitude for his lifelong service to Zimbabwe.

“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU (PF), Cde ED Mnangagwa, has conferred Liberation War Hero status to the late Cde Amos Chinyamutangira, who died on the 29th of August 2025. He will be buried at Mutare Provincial Heroes Acre,” the letter stated.

Cde Chinyamutangira, affectionately known as Amos, was widely admired for his humility, commitment, and strong ties with fellow war veterans. Beyond his military service, he was known as a keen observer of national affairs and a devoted reader of The Manica Post, reflecting his engagement with issues affecting his community and country.

His dedication to his fellow veterans and the broader society earned him deep respect within Mutare and the surrounding regions. Community members recall him as a selfless individual who remained steadfast in supporting younger generations and advocating for the welfare of war veterans.

At the time of his death, Cde Chinyamutangira was en route to Mutare to collect his war veterans’ allowances, a routine that underscored his enduring connection to the fraternity he had helped shape. The tragic circumstances of his passing—a sudden roadside collision—have left family, friends, and colleagues in mourning, highlighting the fragility of life even for those who have long served the nation.

In an interview, his niece, Ms Rumbidzai Chinyamutangira, who had earlier confirmed his passing, expressed both sorrow and gratitude over the national honour.

“As a family, we are humbled that his sacrifice and contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation have been recognised. It brings us comfort knowing he will rest among his fellow heroes,” she said, noting that while the family grieves, they are deeply touched by the government’s acknowledgment of his lifelong service.

Ms Chinyamutangira also highlighted Amos’s dedication to his community, describing him as a man who was always willing to lend a hand, offer guidance, and provide support to those in need. His humility, she said, made him a pillar within the family and the wider war veterans’ network.

The conferment of liberation war hero status on Cde Chinyamutangira is more than a ceremonial gesture; it reflects the nation’s commitment to honouring those who fought for Zimbabwe’s independence. It also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens who risked their lives in pursuit of freedom, many of whom continued to contribute to the country’s development long after independence.

Officials have noted that recognising veterans like Amos reinforces national unity and provides a model of dedication for younger generations. By resting at the Provincial Heroes Acre, Cde Chinyamutangira joins other revered figures whose legacies continue to inspire patriotism and service to the nation.

Preparations for the burial at Mutare Provincial Heroes Acre are underway, with ZANU PF and government officials coordinating to ensure a dignified farewell. The funeral will see attendance from war veterans, political leaders, and members of the public, all eager to pay tribute to a man who epitomised service, humility, and dedication to Zimbabwe.

As the nation mourns the loss of Cde Amos Chinyamutangira, his story stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and the ongoing contributions of those who dedicate their lives to the welfare of their fellow citizens. In honouring him as a liberation war hero, President Mnangagwa has ensured that his legacy will remain enshrined among the nation’s revered patriots.
