5 key steps for Malaria treatment you should know

Malaria, a life-threatening disease, and a significant global health challenge is caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through infected mosquito bites. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, there were an estimated 249 million cases of malaria worldwide, resulting in 608,000 deaths. Malaria primarily spreads through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Additionally, the disease can be transmitted through the reuse of syringes contaminated with malaria-infected blood or by blood transfusions.

The initial symptoms of malaria can be mild, resembling common febrile illnesses, making diagnosis challenging. Prompt and effective treatment is crucial for recovery from malaria and to prevent serious complications. Here are five essential steps to facilitate a faster recovery:

1. **Seek Immediate Medical Attention**: Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Delaying medical consultation can worsen the disease and complicate treatment. If malaria is suspected, especially after traveling to or residing in a malaria-endemic area, seek medical help promptly. Diagnostic tests such as a blood smear or rapid diagnostic test will confirm the presence and type of malaria parasite.

2. **Maintain Proper Hydration**: Adequate fluid intake is essential to maintain electrolyte balance and facilitate toxin elimination from the body. Consuming fluids like water, sugarcane juice, tender coconut water, and water-rich fruits such as oranges and watermelon helps combat dehydration, especially when appetite is reduced due to malaria symptoms.

3. **Get Adequate Rest**: Malaria can cause severe fatigue and weakness. Sufficient rest is crucial to allow the body to recover from the infection and regain strength. Resting adequately supports the body’s natural healing processes.

4. **Consume a Protein-Rich Diet**: Malaria can lead to muscle loss and weakness. A diet rich in protein and complex carbohydrates aids in cellular repair and strengthens the immune system. Include foods like leafy vegetables, beans, nuts, lean meat, eggs, and dairy products, and avoid excessive fats to support digestion during recovery.

5. **Prevent Re-infection**: Preventing mosquito bites is essential, especially in endemic areas. Use insect repellents, wear protective clothing, sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets, and ensure homes are screened with wire mesh to minimize contact with mosquitoes.

Severe cases of malaria may require additional medical interventions such as intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, or blood transfusions to manage complications like severe anemia or organ dysfunction.

Malaria demands prompt and appropriate treatment. Following these steps, in consultation with healthcare professionals, increases the likelihood of a swift recovery and reduces the risk of complications. Early diagnosis, adequate rest, proper hydration, a balanced diet, and preventive measures are essential for effective recovery from malaria.

An Eastern Cape high school teacher in South Africa who sexually assaulted a pupil has been fired and ordered to never work with children again, despite a plea from his representatives at his hearing that he rather be given counseling and moved to another school instead. Ayanda Fani from the Zweliyandila High School was fired for asking a grade 12 pupil to go to the toilet where he kissed her and forced her to touch his private parts.

According to the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) commissioner Malusi Mbuli, Fani pleaded guilty to the allegations, and the matter was finalized on June 27. “The employee, Ayanda Fani, is dismissed with immediate effect, without notice. The provincial department of education of the Eastern Cape must inform Ayanda Fani of his dismissal,” Mbuli said. Read More
