Tragic Accident Along Seke Road Near Zororo Cemetery

A tragic road traffic accident occurred early this morning along Seke Road, directly opposite Zororo Cemetery, leaving motorists and witnesses in shock. Multiple vehicles were reportedly involved in the devastating collision, which brought traffic to a standstill and prompted an immediate response from emergency services.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to reporters at the scene, the crash happened just after sunrise near Manyame Bridge, a section of the busy highway that connects Harare and Chitungwiza. The sound of screeching brakes and shattering metal filled the air moments before a chain reaction of collisions occurred.

“It was horrifying,” said one motorist who narrowly avoided the pile-up. “There were cars everywhere, some overturned, and people screaming for help. It all happened so fast.”

Ambulances and fire rescue teams from the City of Harare and Manyame Emergency Services were dispatched to the site within minutes. The scene quickly turned chaotic as rescuers worked frantically to free trapped passengers from mangled wreckage. Police officers also arrived to cordon off the area, directing the heavy traffic that had backed up for several kilometres in both directions.

While the exact number of casualties had not yet been confirmed at the time of reporting, witnesses described the accident as one of the worst to occur along that stretch in recent months. Several people were believed to have sustained serious injuries, and unconfirmed reports suggested that there may have been fatalities.

“The situation was very bad. I saw at least two people who looked unresponsive, and others bleeding heavily,” another witness said. “It’s heartbreaking to see such loss. Something needs to be done about this road before more lives are lost.”

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that investigations were underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary information indicated that excessive speed and possible driver negligence may have played a role. Weather conditions were reportedly clear, but the combination of morning rush-hour traffic and impatient drivers could have contributed to the tragedy.

Horror Crash Along Seke Road Near Zororo Cemetery

This particular section of Seke Road — near the Zororo Cemetery turn-off and just before the Manyame Bridge — has earned a grim reputation among motorists. Over the past few months, it has witnessed several deadly collisions, with each incident reigniting calls for better traffic control and enforcement.

In a recent accident just a few hundred metres from today’s crash site, multiple passengers lost their lives after a commuter omnibus collided head-on with a haulage truck. Residents and road safety advocates say authorities have not acted swiftly enough to address recurring safety concerns along this busy route.

“This stretch has become a death trap,” said Mr. Tendai Mupfumira, a local resident. “We have been appealing to the City of Harare and the Ministry of Transport to install proper road signs, humps, and barriers, but nothing has been done. Every month, we hear about another accident here.”

Seke Road is one of the busiest highways in Zimbabwe, serving as a lifeline for thousands of commuters traveling daily between Chitungwiza and Harare. During peak hours, the road becomes heavily congested, with buses, haulage trucks, private cars, and informal transport operators jostling for space. This congestion often leads to reckless overtaking and speeding — a deadly combination on the narrow and uneven roadway.

Transport experts have also pointed to poor road design and fading lane markings as major contributors to accidents in the area. Many parts of the road lack adequate lighting and visible signage, making it particularly dangerous at night or during early morning hours.

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has previously urged motorists to exercise caution and patience on the Seke Road stretch, noting that the majority of crashes result from human error. They have also emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of speed limits and the regular maintenance of road infrastructure.

In response to the latest incident, police have urged drivers to avoid the area while recovery operations and investigations continue. Motorists traveling between Harare and Chitungwiza were advised to use alternative routes such as Hwedza Road and St Mary’s access points to ease congestion.

As the sun rose higher over the crash site, mangled vehicles still lay scattered across the tarmac — a grim reminder of the dangers of careless driving and neglected road maintenance. Bystanders gathered quietly, some offering prayers for the victims, while tow trucks prepared to remove the wreckage.

For now, the exact number of lives lost remains unclear, but the tragedy has once again reignited calls for government action. With each fatal crash along Seke Road, the cries for improved safety measures grow louder — yet the dangerous stretch continues to claim lives week after week.

Until meaningful interventions are implemented, residents say, the road near Zororo Cemetery will remain one of the most perilous in Zimbabwe’s transport network — a haunting corridor where tragedy has become all too familiar.
