LIMPOPO – Controversial South African rapper Shebeshxt, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, has once again found himself at the centre of a major scandal — this time facing an attempted murder investigation after allegedly shooting and seriously wounding another motorist during a violent road rage incident earlier this month.
The “Ke Di Shxt Malume” hitmaker, known for his aggressive lyrics and often chaotic public persona, is accused of pulling out a firearm and shooting a man following a heated altercation in Polokwane. According to reports, the confrontation began on the road before spilling over to a nearby petrol station, where the situation turned violent.
Police say that an argument between the rapper and another driver quickly escalated when both vehicles stopped to refuel. Witnesses reported that the two men exchanged insults and threats before Shebeshxt allegedly drew his weapon and fired a single shot, hitting the victim in the stomach.
The victim, whose name has not been released for security reasons, was rushed to a local hospital in Polokwane, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors have described his condition as critical but stable, while his family is said to be cooperating with authorities.
Following the incident, Limpopo police opened a case of attempted murder, which has since been handed over to the provincial Murder and Robbery Unit for deeper investigation. The case reportedly occurred on October 19, and investigators are treating it as a high-priority matter given the involvement of a high-profile public figure.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the details to the Polokwane Review-Observer, revealing that the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, personally directed that the matter be handled by the specialised unit.
“The case has since been taken over by the Murder and Robbery Unit following instructions from the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe,” Ledwaba said. “The team has been directed to investigate with a view to arrest, not the other way around.”
He added that detectives were working around the clock to complete the investigation and that an arrest was “imminent.”
“The investigation has intensified, and we are tightening all loose ends. Once the necessary evidence is gathered, the suspect will be brought in for questioning and possible arrest,” Ledwaba said.
Sources close to the investigation said police were also analysing CCTV footage from the petrol station and nearby businesses to verify the sequence of events and confirm witness statements.
Rapper Shebeshxt Under Investigation for Attempted Murder After Alleged Road Rage Shooting
This latest scandal adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding the 29-year-old rapper, who has developed a reputation for violent altercations and confrontations both on and off stage.
Earlier this year, Shebeshxt made headlines after a video went viral on social media showing him in a heated confrontation where he appeared to brandish a large knife. In the clip, which spread rapidly across X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, the visibly agitated rapper could be seen unzipping his Nike jacket, pulling out a blade-like object, and lunging toward another man while shouting profanities.
Though police never confirmed whether formal charges were laid following that incident, the video sparked public debate about celebrity misconduct and the growing culture of violence among young entertainers.
In 2022, Shebeshxt was charged with attempted murder in a separate incident after allegedly stabbing a man in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo. Although that case reportedly went quiet, it reinforced his image as a volatile figure in the South African entertainment industry.
Despite his repeated brushes with the law, Shebeshxt has continued to enjoy a loyal fan base and remains a fixture in the Limpopo hip-hop and amapiano scenes. His music, often laced with controversial lyrics and street references, has found popularity among youth audiences — but critics argue that his behaviour offstage is damaging his career and reputation.
Entertainment industry analysts say the latest case could have serious implications for his brand and endorsement deals if the allegations are proven true. Music promoter and cultural commentator Tshepo Mahlangu said Shebeshxt’s repeated involvement in violent incidents may make it difficult for promoters and sponsors to associate with him.
“No matter how talented he is, violence and crime allegations create a cloud over his career,” Mahlangu said. “Brands don’t want to be linked to controversy, especially when it involves firearms or public endangerment.”
Meanwhile, social media has been flooded with mixed reactions from fans. While some have expressed disappointment and urged the rapper to “get help and stay out of trouble,” others have accused the media of unfairly targeting him.
As police investigations continue, the Limpopo artist remains at large, and authorities have urged him to come forward to assist with the inquiry. If charged and convicted of attempted murder, Shebeshxt could face a lengthy prison sentence under South Africa’s strict gun and violent crime laws.
For now, the music star’s future hangs in the balance — once again overshadowed by controversy and questions about whether his fame has spiralled beyond his control.
