The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has called on members of the public to provide information that could lead to the arrest of opposition activist Godfrey Karembera, widely known as Madzibaba Veshanduko. The appeal comes after Karembera, along with an associate, reportedly evaded law enforcement during a high-speed pursuit in Harare.
In a statement released over the weekend, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that Karembera, 47, and his associate, Kudzai Weston Saruwaka, were involved in the illegal distribution of political fliers in the suburbs of Machipisa, Glen View, and Budiriro. Authorities allege that the materials were aimed at mobilizing citizens to participate in unsanctioned protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government, which were scheduled for October 17. Police further claim that the planned demonstrations were linked to fugitive war veteran Blessed Geza, who is believed to have orchestrated the activities.
“Police are appealing for information leading to the arrest of Godfrey Karembera and Kudzai Weston Saruwaka, who fled from officers during a high-speed chase while allegedly distributing fliers in Machipisa, Glen View, and Budiriro. The two face charges under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
Karembera is a well-known supporter of Nelson Chamisa, former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), and has a history of confrontations with law enforcement. In April 2025, his home in Guruve was petrol-bombed by unidentified assailants. Although Karembera was not at home during the attack, his 17-year-old son, Laxmore, sustained injuries while trying to rescue his younger siblings as the fire engulfed the family property. The incident drew widespread attention and highlighted the personal risks faced by political activists in the country.
The activist’s contentious relationship with authorities dates back even further. In 2022, Karembera was arrested in Harare for allegedly insulting police officers and referring to them as dogs. He has also attracted scrutiny for wearing yellow clothing, a symbol widely associated with allegiance to the CCC. Such incidents have cemented his reputation as a vocal and often provocative figure in Zimbabwean opposition politics.
