Prison guard officer assaults journalist for recording a video at court

Prison guard officer assaults journalist for recording a video at court. There is a video that has gone viral on social media of a journalist being attacked by two prison officers for recording a video whilst a truck carrying prisoners arrive at Harare court.

The journalist is heard being pushed and beaten as he is asked to switch off his camera. The other prison officer is seen loading and putting his riffle on a  shoot position. Check the video below

However, the Zimbabwe Prison Service has issued a statement defending their officers and this is what they had to say:

Following an (video) incident at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on January 14, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service says the journalists were obstructing free passage of a court truck.

“The court truck was ferrying D class inmates who are high risk to security …journalists came too close to the moving truck & one of them refused to take the order… “According to Section 30 of the Prison Act, an officer is empowered to use a weapon when the circumstances warrant because such incidences can cause pandemonium which can lead to mass escape of inmates, loss of property, death or injuries.

“Therefore, officers have to protect the inmates from the unseen danger that might occur.
“However, the officer did not use the firearm as purported but was ready to take appropriate action in preparation for any eventuality. “The incident was necessitated by the unprofessional conduct by a journalist who refused to respect a simple instruction that was given to him to pave way for a court truck, which was carrying D Class inmates…”
