Soldiers mercilessly beat lockdown enforcing cops for disrupting their braai party. Chananda was on patrol together with a team of four other Police officers on Monday enforcing the Covid-19 lockdown, according to a case before Chipinge Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzi.

Steven Chananda (29), a cop based at Chipinge Urban was severely assaulted and injured by two soldiers for disrupting a party where the two were among people braaing and drinking during the national lockdown.

The suspects Milicent Ndebvu (30) and Mike Nyabote (36) stationed at 3.3 brigade are facing two counts of assaulting a Police officer and obstructing law enforcement agents performing their duties during national lockdown as defined in Section 11 of Statutory Instrument 83/20.

They both pleaded not guilty and were remanded to Saturday for bail hearing. Prosecutor Gift Bikita said on Monday January 9 at around 7pm at Medium Density Shopping Centre, Chananda was on patrol together with Kudzai Mutikizizi, Tarisai Muchemwa, Mercy Jumburu, and Rejoice Gwanyanya.

Chananda was in charge of the team. “The complainant and his team noticed a group of people braaing, drinking beer, playing high volume music and dancing at the shopping centre,” said the prosecutor.

The two soldiers allegedly struck the complainant several times with a stone while another hit him with a plastic chair and ordered him to remove handcuffs on a DJ that the Police had arrested.

“Nyabote struck the complainant six times on the shoulders and abdomen with stones. His accomplice used a plastic chair to hit the complainant once on the shoulder and once on the back. “The complainant sustained injuries all over the body and medical evidence will be produced,” said Bikita.
